Hypertension Treatment in Katy, TX

Outpatient evaluation and long-term management of high blood pressure at our Katy office.

High blood pressure (hypertension) is one of the most important risk factors for heart attack, stroke, heart failure and kidney disease. Because it usually causes no symptoms, many people learn about it from a routine check or a reading at a pharmacy. Steady, well-planned treatment can lower those long-term risks.

Adnan Khalid, MD, a board-certified cardiologist, provides personalized, evidence-based hypertension care at our Katy office on W Grand Pkwy S. Patients from Katy, Cinco Ranch, Fulshear and nearby West Houston communities visit this office.

Hypertension Care in Katy, TX: When to See a Cardiologist

Many people with high blood pressure are treated well by their primary care clinician. A visit with a cardiologist in Katy can be helpful when:

  • Your readings stay above goal even though you take your medicines
  • You need three or more blood pressure medicines, or side effects make treatment difficult
  • You also have coronary artery disease, heart failure, an irregular heartbeat or a previous heart attack or stroke
  • An EKG or echocardiogram showed a thickened heart muscle or another abnormal finding
  • Your blood pressure rose suddenly, or you were seen in an emergency room for very high readings
  • You have diabetes, kidney disease or high cholesterol and want a combined plan for your heart risk

Dr. Khalid’s listed specialties include cardiovascular disease, interventional cardiology, and advanced heart failure and transplant cardiology, so blood pressure is managed in the context of your overall heart health.

Conditions That Often Occur With Hypertension

High blood pressure rarely travels alone. During your Katy visit, Dr. Khalid looks at how your blood pressure fits with other conditions that share the same risk factors or that hypertension can worsen, including:

Treating these together, instead of one at a time, gives a clearer picture of your overall cardiovascular risk.

Why Early, Steady Control Matters

Hypertension usually develops slowly and silently. Left untreated over the years, it can contribute to:

  • Heart attack and stroke
  • Heart failure and thickening or enlargement of the heart
  • Chronic kidney disease
  • Vision problems
  • Peripheral arterial disease

Early diagnosis and consistent management help lower these risks. Very high readings are different: if a repeat reading stays above 180/120 and you have chest pain, shortness of breath, back pain, numbness or weakness, vision changes or difficulty speaking, call 911. Call 911 for chest discomfort lasting more than a few minutes or stroke signs (face drooping, arm weakness, speech difficulty) at any blood pressure.

Diagnosing High Blood Pressure – Our Process in Katy

The first goal is to confirm that your readings are accurate and to see whether high blood pressure has affected your heart. Your evaluation may include:

  • Office and home blood pressure readings – standardized office measurements compared with a home log. Bring your home monitor so its readings can be checked against office equipment.
  • Electrocardiogram (EKG/ECG) – an office EKG records heart rhythm and can suggest a thickened heart muscle, but it cannot measure heart function directly.
  • Echocardiogram – an ultrasound of the heart, performed or arranged by our office, that shows heart-muscle thickness, pumping function and valves.
  • Laboratory tests – kidney function, electrolytes, blood sugar, cholesterol and urine protein, usually ordered through a lab.
  • Other tests when needed – such as stress testing or ambulatory blood pressure monitoring, chosen based on your symptoms and risk. Not every patient needs every test.

Dr. Khalid reviews the results with you and explains what they mean for your treatment. Some findings, such as a thickened heart muscle, can improve once blood pressure is well controlled.

Personalized Hypertension Treatment Plans

Your plan is based on your average readings, overall cardiovascular risk, other medical conditions and how well you tolerate treatment. It may include:

  • Lifestyle changes: a heart-healthy eating pattern with less sodium, regular physical activity, weight management, limiting alcohol, stopping tobacco and better sleep.
  • Medication: common first-line choices include thiazide-type diuretics, ACE inhibitors, angiotensin receptor blockers and long-acting calcium channel blockers. Some patients need two medicines, sometimes combined in one pill.
  • Treating related conditions: such as coronary artery disease, heart failure, sleep apnea or kidney disease. Any procedure that requires a hospital is scheduled at an affiliated hospital, and our office explains where.
  • Ongoing monitoring: regular follow-up to review home readings, check for side effects and adjust doses.

Do not stop or change a blood pressure medicine on your own. Follow the specific instructions from your care team.

Working With Your Primary Care Clinician

A cardiology visit for high blood pressure does not replace your primary care clinician. In most cases Dr. Khalid shares findings and recommendations with the clinician who referred you, so everyone works from the same plan. Some patients return to primary care for routine blood pressure checks once their readings are stable; others with heart disease continue regular cardiology follow-up.

Our Katy office is at 410 W Grand Pkwy S, Suite 4D. Patients who live closer to Sugar Land can visit our Sugar Land high blood pressure office, whose page also includes a detailed guide to resistant hypertension and home blood pressure measurement.

What to Expect at Your Katy Visit

Before your visit: complete your registration forms, and gather your medication and supplement list, a week or two of home blood pressure readings if you have them, your home monitor, and recent lab, EKG or hospital records.

During your visit: expect a review of your symptoms and history, a heart-focused physical exam, repeat blood pressure measurements and, when appropriate, an office EKG. Dr. Khalid will explain what your readings mean and whether more testing is needed.

After your visit: you will leave with a written plan that may include lifestyle steps, medication changes, home monitoring instructions and a follow-up date. Blood pressure treatment is often adjusted over several visits, so follow-up is part of the plan. Ask our office whether a video visit is appropriate for some follow-ups; rules depend on where you are located during the visit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1: How is hypertension confirmed at Advanced Cardiology?
Dr. Khalid reviews your history, examines you and compares standardized office readings with home or ambulatory readings. An office EKG, blood and urine tests, and sometimes an echocardiogram help show whether blood pressure has affected your heart or kidneys.

Q2: What treatment options are available for high blood pressure?
Treatment is personalized and may include lifestyle changes, blood pressure medicines, home monitoring and treatment of related conditions such as coronary artery disease, heart failure or sleep apnea. If a hospital procedure is ever needed for a related heart condition, it is scheduled at an affiliated hospital.

Q3: How often will I need follow-up?
It depends on your readings and treatment. Visits are usually closer together while medicines are being adjusted and further apart once blood pressure is stable. Your care team will tell you when to return.
