Heart evaluation and prevention care after a stroke or TIA, coordinated with your neurology and primary care team.
Recovering from a stroke or transient ischemic attack (TIA, sometimes called a “mini-stroke”) can be physically and emotionally demanding. The heart often plays a role: some strokes are caused by clots that form in the heart, and stroke survivors frequently have high blood pressure, high cholesterol or coronary artery disease that raise the risk of another event.
Adnan Khalid, MD, a board-certified cardiologist, evaluates the heart after a stroke or TIA at our Katy and Sugar Land offices. He looks for heart-related causes, helps lower the risk of another stroke or heart attack, and works alongside your neurologist and primary care clinician.

Dr. Khalid reviews your symptoms, history and test results himself

A neurologist leads stroke care, but a cardiology evaluation is often part of the plan because the heart can be both a cause and a target. A cardiologist can help:
When the cause of a stroke is not clear after the hospital stay (sometimes called a cryptogenic stroke), longer heart rhythm monitoring and heart imaging are often recommended.
Adnan Khalid, MD, is a fellowship-trained cardiologist who cares for patients with heart conditions after a stroke, atrial fibrillation and other arrhythmias, coronary artery disease, peripheral artery disease, heart failure and hypertension. His listed specialties include cardiovascular disease, interventional cardiology, and advanced heart failure and transplant cardiology.
He earned his medical degree at Nishtar Medical College and completed his internal medicine residency and cardiology fellowship at the University of Missouri–Kansas City School of Medicine. He speaks English, Arabic, Hindi and Urdu. Known for his patient-centered approach, Dr. Khalid takes the time to explain each diagnosis and treatment option so patients can make informed decisions about their care.
Outside the clinic, he enjoys reading, traveling, fitness, and spending quality time with his family.
“Every patient deserves care that combines expertise with empathy. We guide you every step of your recovery journey.” – Dr. Khalid

Conditions that may cause a stroke or raise the risk of another one include:
Call 911 right away for any new stroke signs, even if they go away. Remember F.A.S.T.:
Other sudden signs include numbness on one side, confusion, trouble seeing, trouble walking or loss of balance, and a severe headache with no known cause.
Also call 911 for chest discomfort that lasts more than a few minutes or comes and goes, shortness of breath, a cold sweat, nausea or lightheadedness, or discomfort in the arms, back, neck, jaw or stomach. Office messages and appointment requests are not for emergencies.
Testing is chosen based on the type of stroke, what was already done in the hospital and your other health conditions. Your evaluation may include:
Your plan is built with your stroke team and focuses on preventing another stroke or heart event. It may include:
Recovery after a stroke involves several clinicians. Dr. Khalid focuses on the heart and blood vessels and shares findings with your neurologist and primary care clinician so everyone works from the same plan. Bring a family member or caregiver to visits if that helps you remember instructions, and ask questions about anything that is unclear. Many stroke survivors also feel tired, low or anxious during recovery; tell your care team, because support is available.
Please bring your hospital discharge summary, brain and heart imaging reports, rhythm monitor results, and a complete medication list. Dr. Khalid will review your stroke history and risk factors, examine you and may perform an office EKG.
He will then explain which additional tests, if any, are recommended and why, and discuss how your heart findings affect your stroke-prevention plan. Follow-up visits are scheduled to review results and adjust treatment. Ask our office whether a video visit is appropriate for some follow-ups; rules depend on where you are located during the visit.

Q1: Why is cardiac care important after a stroke?
Some strokes are caused by clots from the heart, and many stroke survivors have heart or blood vessel disease. A cardiology evaluation looks for heart-related causes and helps lower the risk of another stroke or heart attack.
Q2: What tests are used after a stroke?
Common tests include an EKG, extended rhythm monitoring to look for atrial fibrillation, and an echocardiogram. Some patients need a TEE, an implantable rhythm recorder or other testing. Not every patient needs every test.
Q3: I had a TIA and feel fine now. Do I still need an evaluation?
Yes. A TIA is a warning sign that a stroke may follow. If symptoms are happening now or just happened, call 911 even if they went away. Afterward, follow-up testing helps find and treat the cause.
Q4: Does Advanced Cardiology accept insurance?
Yes. Most major insurance plans are accepted, and coverage is verified individually.
Q5: Where are your offices located and how can I schedule an appointment?
We have two locations:
