Hyperlipidemia (High Cholesterol) Treatment in Katy & Sugar Land, TX

Cholesterol testing, cardiovascular risk assessment and long-term lipid management for adults.

High cholesterol (hyperlipidemia) is a major risk factor for heart attack, stroke and peripheral artery disease. It usually causes no symptoms, so most people find out from a blood test. Over time, excess LDL (“bad”) cholesterol can build up as plaque inside artery walls, which is why early detection and steady management matter.

Adnan Khalid, MD, a board-certified cardiologist, provides personalized, evidence-based cholesterol care at our Katy and Sugar Land offices. Patients from across Fort Bend County and West Houston visit both locations.

Who Should See a Cardiologist About Cholesterol?

Many people with high cholesterol are managed well by their primary care clinician. A cardiology visit may be helpful when:

  • Your LDL cholesterol stays high despite treatment, or you cannot tolerate statins
  • You already have coronary artery disease, a previous heart attack or stroke, or peripheral artery disease
  • You have a very high LDL level (often 190 mg/dL or higher) or a family history of early heart disease, which can suggest an inherited cholesterol disorder
  • You have diabetes, chronic kidney disease or high blood pressure together with high cholesterol
  • Your risk is uncertain and you want help deciding whether to start medicine

Dr. Khalid looks at cholesterol as one part of your overall cardiovascular risk, not as a single number.

Conditions That May Be Linked to High Cholesterol

Elevated cholesterol contributes to atherosclerosis, the buildup of plaque in the arteries. Over time this can lead to or worsen:

  • Coronary artery disease and heart attack
  • Stroke or transient ischemic attack (TIA), and the need for post-stroke cardiac care
  • Peripheral arterial disease
  • Narrowing of the arteries to the kidneys

High cholesterol often occurs with other conditions that raise cardiovascular risk, such as high blood pressure, diabetes, metabolic syndrome, obesity and chronic kidney disease. Some cases are linked to other causes, including an underactive thyroid, certain medicines or an inherited condition such as familial hypercholesterolemia.

Why High Cholesterol Requires Attention

Plaque builds slowly and silently. Many people feel well until a heart attack or stroke occurs. Lowering LDL cholesterol, especially in people at higher risk, reduces the chance of those events.

High cholesterol does not usually need emergency care, but its complications can. Call 911 for chest discomfort that lasts more than a few minutes or comes and goes, or for stroke signs such as face drooping, arm weakness or speech difficulty, even if the symptoms go away.

How Is Cholesterol Risk Evaluated?

A cholesterol number is most useful when it is combined with your overall risk. Under the 2026 ACC/AHA dyslipidemia guideline, evaluation may include:

Lipid panel

A blood test that measures total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, HDL cholesterol and triglycerides. Your care team will tell you whether you need to fast beforehand.

Lipoprotein(a)

The guideline recommends measuring lipoprotein(a), an inherited cholesterol particle, at least once in adulthood. An elevated level can raise risk even when other numbers look acceptable.

10-year risk estimate

For adults 30 to 79 without known cardiovascular disease, the PREVENT-ASCVD equations estimate the chance of a heart attack or stroke over the next 10 years. A risk of 3% to under 5% is considered borderline, and 5% to under 10% intermediate. Risk-enhancing factors, such as family history, kidney disease or a high lipoprotein(a), are also considered.

Coronary artery calcium scoring when it helps decide

For selected men over 40 and women over 45 at borderline or intermediate risk, a coronary calcium scan can show whether calcified plaque is present and help guide the decision about medicine. It does not show every type of plaque or how narrowed an artery is.

Other tests when needed

Blood pressure, blood sugar, kidney and thyroid tests may be checked. An office EKG or other heart testing is ordered only when symptoms or findings call for it.

Personalized Cholesterol Treatment Plans

Treatment is tailored to your risk level. The 2026 ACC/AHA guideline describes LDL cholesterol goals that become stricter as risk rises: generally below 100 mg/dL, below 70 mg/dL, or below 55 mg/dL for people at the highest risk, such as those with established cardiovascular disease. Your personal goal is set with Dr. Khalid.

Treatment options may include:

  • Lifestyle changes: a heart-healthy eating pattern lower in saturated fat, regular physical activity, weight management, limiting alcohol and stopping tobacco.
  • Statin therapy: the most widely used cholesterol-lowering medicine for people who need it.
  • Additional medicines: such as ezetimibe or other non-statin options when LDL remains above goal or statins are not tolerated.
  • Treating related conditions: blood pressure, diabetes and kidney disease are managed together with cholesterol. If testing finds significant artery disease, any procedure that requires a hospital is scheduled at an affiliated hospital.
  • Follow-up testing: repeat lipid panels to confirm the treatment is working and safe.

Do not stop or change a cholesterol medicine on your own. If you have side effects, talk with your care team; there are often other options.

Cholesterol Care as Part of Prevention

Cholesterol management works best as part of a broader preventive cardiology plan. Dr. Khalid reviews your numbers alongside blood pressure, blood sugar, weight, smoking history and family history, and explains how each change you make affects your overall risk. If you want a structured look at your risk, see our heart disease risk assessment page. We see patients at our Katy and Sugar Land offices and share findings with your primary care clinician when appropriate.

Everyday habits make a real difference. Choosing more vegetables, fruit, beans, whole grains, nuts and fish; limiting saturated fat from fatty meats, butter and fried foods; staying active most days; and keeping a healthy weight can all lower LDL cholesterol and triglycerides. For people at higher risk, these steps work alongside medicine rather than replacing it.

What to Expect During Your Visit

Your appointment begins with a review of your medical and family history, lifestyle, current medicines and supplements, and any previous lipid results. Bring recent lab reports if you have them. Dr. Khalid will perform a heart-focused physical examination and decide whether additional blood work or testing would help.

Afterward, he will explain your results, your estimated risk and your treatment options, and you will agree on a plan and a follow-up schedule. Because cholesterol treatment is long term, follow-up visits are used to recheck labs and adjust treatment. Ask our office whether a video visit is appropriate for some follow-ups; rules depend on where you are located during the visit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1: How is high cholesterol diagnosed?
With a blood test called a lipid panel, which measures total cholesterol, LDL, HDL and triglycerides. Your results are interpreted together with your medical history, family history and estimated 10-year risk.

Q2: What is a good LDL cholesterol level for me?
It depends on your risk. Current ACC/AHA guidance uses goals of below 100, below 70 or below 55 mg/dL depending on risk, with the lowest goals for people who already have cardiovascular disease. Dr. Khalid will explain which goal fits your situation.

Q3: What if statins gave me side effects?
Tell your care team rather than stopping on your own. A different statin, a lower dose or a non-statin medicine may be options.

Q4: Does Advanced Cardiology accept insurance?
Yes. Most major insurance plans are accepted, and coverage is verified individually.

Q5: Where are your offices located and how can I schedule an appointment?
We have two locations:
