Heart Palpitations Treatment in Sugar Land & Katy, TX

Advanced Cardiology – Local Evaluation for Palpitations and Heart Rhythm Concerns

Feeling your heart racing, fluttering, pounding, or skipping beats can be unsettling. These sensations are called heart palpitations. They are often harmless, but sometimes they point to a heart rhythm problem or another condition that needs treatment.

At Advanced Cardiology, Adnan Khalid, MD, evaluates palpitations at our Sugar Land and Katy offices. This page explains what a local office evaluation involves and how to prepare. For a fuller explanation of palpitation types, causes and treatments, see our complete guide to heart palpitations and irregular heartbeat.

What Are Heart Palpitations?

Heart palpitations are sensations that make you suddenly aware of your heartbeat. People often describe them as:

  • Fluttering or “butterflies” in the chest
  • A pounding or racing heartbeat
  • Irregular or skipped beats
  • A feeling that the heart “flips” or briefly pauses

They may last a few seconds or come and go throughout the day. You might notice them in your chest, throat or neck, at rest, during activity or when lying down at night.

When Are Palpitations an Emergency?

Call 911 if palpitations come with any of the following, even if the symptoms ease or go away:

  • Chest pain, pressure or discomfort that lasts more than a few minutes or goes away and comes back
  • Shortness of breath
  • Discomfort in one or both arms, the back, neck, jaw or stomach
  • Fainting, nearly fainting, or sudden lightheadedness
  • A cold sweat or nausea
  • Signs of stroke: face drooping, arm weakness or speech difficulty

Do not wait to see whether symptoms get worse. Our office phone line, messages and appointment request form are not for emergencies.

What Can Cause Heart Palpitations?

Palpitations can have everyday triggers or medical causes. Part of Dr. Khalid’s evaluation is working out which applies to you, because the right next step depends on the cause.

Common Everyday Triggers

  • Stress and anxiety

  • Caffeine or alcohol

  • Nicotine or certain medications

  • Dehydration

  • Strenuous exercise

What Happens at a Palpitations Evaluation in Sugar Land or Katy?

Visits take place at our Katy office (410 W Grand Pkwy S, Suite 4D) or our Sugar Land office (7102 Tarrington Ave, Suite 505). A typical evaluation includes the steps below.

1. A Detailed History

Dr. Khalid will ask when the palpitations started, how long episodes last, what they feel like and what you were doing when they began. He will also ask whether they come with chest discomfort, shortness of breath, dizziness or fainting, and about caffeine, alcohol, sleep, stress, medications, supplements and any family history of heart rhythm problems.

2. A Physical Exam and Office EKG

The exam includes checking your heart rate and blood pressure and listening to your heart. An electrocardiogram (EKG) records your heart’s electrical activity for a short time at rest. It can show a rhythm problem if one is happening during the test, and it can show other clues about the heart. A normal EKG between episodes does not rule out a rhythm problem that comes and goes.

3. Rhythm Monitoring When Needed

Because palpitations often come and go, a wearable monitor may be needed to capture an episode. Options performed or arranged by our office include:

The right monitor depends on how often your symptoms occur. A monitor shows your rhythm only during the recording period; it does not show heart structure or blocked arteries.

4. Other Tests if Indicated

  • Echocardiogram: an ultrasound of the heart chambers, valves and pumping function. It does not record your rhythm over time.

  • Exercise stress test: shows how your heart and rhythm respond to exercise, which can help when palpitations happen during activity.

  • Blood tests: ordered as needed, for example to check thyroid function, blood count or potassium levels.

Not every patient needs every test. Dr. Khalid recommends tests based on your symptoms, exam and history, and explains what each one can and cannot show.

Treatment Options for Heart Palpitations

Treatment depends on the cause. Many people with harmless palpitations need reassurance and help managing triggers rather than medication.

  • Lifestyle changes: reducing caffeine and alcohol, managing stress, staying hydrated and improving sleep

  • Treating an underlying cause: such as a thyroid problem or low potassium

  • Medications: to control heart rate or rhythm, or to lower stroke risk in conditions such as AFib

  • Cardioversion: a hospital-based procedure that uses a controlled electrical shock to restore a normal rhythm in certain arrhythmias

  • Ablation procedures: catheter-based hospital procedures that target abnormal electrical pathways in selected rhythm problems; Dr. Khalid will discuss whether this fits your situation and how it would be arranged

  • Pacemaker or defibrillator: for certain slow or dangerous heart rhythms

Procedures that require a hospital are scheduled at an affiliated hospital, and our office will explain where. Results and recovery vary from person to person. Our goal is to relieve your symptoms, prevent complications and improve your quality of life.

How to Track Your Symptoms Before Your Visit

A simple symptom record can make your evaluation more useful. Before your appointment, try to write down:

  • The date, time and length of each episode

  • What it felt like: racing, pounding, skipping or fluttering

  • What you were doing: resting, exercising, eating, lying down or feeling stressed

  • Any caffeine, alcohol or medication taken beforehand

  • Other symptoms, such as dizziness or shortness of breath

  • Your pulse, if you were able to check it

If a smartwatch or home device recorded your rhythm during an episode, bring the readings. These devices can be helpful, but they are not a substitute for medical-grade testing.

Getting Ready for Your Appointment

  • Complete registration forms ahead of time through our patient portal.

  • Bring a list of all medications and supplements, including doses.

  • Bring prior EKGs, monitor reports, lab results or hospital records if you have them.

  • Bring your insurance card and photo ID. We accept most major insurance plans; coverage is verified individually.

  • Keep taking your medications unless your care team gives you specific instructions.

Please call (713) 258-6111 before coming in, and call to confirm office hours for each location.

What Happens After Your Evaluation?

Dr. Khalid will review your history, exam and any test results with you and explain what they mean. If testing shows a harmless cause, the focus may be on managing triggers and knowing which symptoms should prompt a call. If a rhythm problem or another heart condition is found, he will discuss treatment options, the benefits and limits of each, and a follow-up plan. Test results are reviewed with you at a follow-up visit or by our office. If palpitations change, become more frequent or come with new symptoms, contact our office; call 911 for any emergency warning signs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are heart palpitations dangerous?

Most are not. Many come from premature beats or everyday triggers. Palpitations can also come from arrhythmias such as AFib that need treatment, and an evaluation helps tell the difference.

When should I see a cardiologist for palpitations?

Consider a cardiology evaluation if palpitations are frequent, last more than a few minutes, happen during exercise, or occur when you already have heart disease or a family history of heart rhythm problems. If you have any of the warning signs listed above, call 911 instead of making an appointment.

Do patients from nearby communities visit your offices?

Yes. Patients from Richmond, Missouri City, Stafford and other nearby communities visit our Sugar Land or Katy office.

Can I have a video visit for palpitations?

Ask our office whether a video visit is appropriate for you. Telehealth rules depend on where you are located during the visit, and tests such as an EKG require an in-person visit.
