Why Cardiologists Recommend a Coronary Calcium Scan
A coronary calcium scan offers a painless, non-invasive way to detect early signs of coronary artery disease before symptoms develop. Our cardiologist recommends this test for patients at risk of heart disease to assess the amount of calcium buildup in the arteries—a key indicator of plaque and potential blockage.
Who Should Consider a Coronary Calcium Scan?
Middle-Aged Adults with Risk Factors
Why It Matters: Age is a strong factor in heart disease risk, especially for those over 40 with other risk factors.
How It Helps: The scan identifies calcium deposits that signal early atherosclerosis, even when symptoms are absent.
Family History of Heart Disease
Why It Matters: Genetics play a major role in cardiovascular risk.
How It Helps: Detecting calcium buildup early can guide preventive measures tailored to your unique risk profile.
High Cholesterol or Diabetes
Why It Matters: Both conditions accelerate plaque formation in arteries.
How It Helps: The scan helps determine if aggressive treatment or lifestyle changes are necessary to slow progression.
Smokers or Former Smokers
Why It Matters: Smoking damages artery walls, increasing plaque buildup.
How It Helps: Calcium scoring helps quantify artery damage, motivating lifestyle changes or medical intervention.
Unexplained Chest Discomfort or Shortness of Breath
Why It Matters: These symptoms may indicate early coronary artery disease even without an abnormal EKG or stress test.
How It Helps: The scan can detect plaque that might not show up on other tests, leading to timely diagnosis.
Assessing Heart Disease Risk When Other Tests Are Inconclusive
Why It Matters: Traditional risk calculators sometimes underestimate risk.
How It Helps: Coronary calcium scoring provides a more precise risk estimate, helping doctors decide on cholesterol-lowering therapy or other treatments.
Heart disease can develop silently—don’t wait for symptoms. Visit our Katy or Sugar Land clinic for quick, accurate coronary calcium scans with expert follow-up care.
What Your Coronary Calcium Score Reveals
No Calcium Detected (Score of 0):
A score of zero means no detectable calcium in your coronary arteries, indicating a very low risk of coronary artery disease at this time. Your cardiologist may recommend routine heart-healthy lifestyle habits and periodic monitoring.
Mild Calcium Buildup (Score 1-99):
This score shows early plaque deposits. While not immediately dangerous, it signals the start of artery changes. Your doctor may suggest lifestyle changes, cholesterol management, and closer follow-up to prevent progression.
Moderate Calcium Buildup (Score 100-399):
A moderate score indicates more significant plaque accumulation and increased risk for heart disease. Further testing like stress tests or advanced imaging may be needed to evaluate artery narrowing and guide treatment.
Severe Calcium Buildup (Score 400+):
A high score reflects extensive plaque, raising the risk of heart attacks or other cardiac events. Aggressive risk factor control, medications, and possibly procedures may be recommended to manage your heart health.
What Your Score Means for Your Heart Care:
Your coronary calcium score helps your cardiologist personalize your care plan, from lifestyle advice and medications to more detailed diagnostic testing or interventions.
At Advanced Cardiology, our experts carefully review your calcium scan results to guide precise, effective heart disease prevention and treatment in Katy and Sugar Land. Don’t wait—understand your heart’s health and take action early.
