Cardioversion for Arrhythmia Management and Symptom Relief
Cardioversion is a procedure that helps reset an abnormal heart rhythm back to normal, either with medications or a controlled electric shock. It’s commonly recommended for patients experiencing irregular heartbeats such as atrial fibrillation (AFib), atrial flutter, or supraventricular tachycardia (SVT), which can cause symptoms like palpitations, dizziness, fatigue, and shortness of breath.
At Advanced Cardiology, serving Katy, Sugar Land, Richmond, and the Greater Houston area, we use the latest techniques and monitoring technology to perform cardioversion safely and effectively. Whether you need a planned outpatient procedure or urgent rhythm correction, our team provides compassionate care tailored to your needs.
Dr. Adnan Khalid, MD, a board-certified cardiologist with extensive experience in arrhythmia management, will guide you through the process, discuss risks and benefits, and help plan ongoing treatment to maintain a healthy heart rhythm.

Why Cardiologists Recommend Cardioversion
Cardioversion is a key treatment option for patients with certain types of irregular heart rhythms, especially when symptoms interfere with quality of life or when medication alone fails to restore a normal heartbeat. It’s often recommended by cardiologists for patients with atrial fibrillation (AFib), atrial flutter, or other types of supraventricular tachycardia.
Here’s why:
Quickly Restores Normal Heart Rhythm
Cardioversion delivers a precisely timed electrical shock to the heart, helping it reset into a normal sinus rhythm. This can offer immediate relief from symptoms like palpitations, dizziness, fatigue, and shortness of breath.
Reduces the Risk of Stroke
Conditions like AFib increase the risk of stroke due to blood clots forming in the heart. Restoring a normal rhythm through cardioversion may reduce this risk, especially when combined with appropriate blood thinner therapy before and after the procedure.
Improves Heart Efficiency and Function
An irregular heartbeat can make your heart work harder than it should, leading to heart failure over time. By restoring a steady rhythm, cardioversion helps your heart pump more effectively and reduces strain on the cardiovascular system.
Supports Ongoing Diagnosis and Treatment Planning
Cardioversion can provide valuable insight into how your heart responds to rhythm correction. This helps your cardiologist decide on the best long-term treatment plan, including medications, lifestyle adjustments, or additional procedures like ablation.
At Advanced Cardiology, we carefully evaluate whether cardioversion is right for you based on your health, heart rhythm patterns, and overall treatment goals.
Common Indications for Cardioversion
Atrial Fibrillation or Atrial Flutter:
These are two of the most common types of arrhythmias that can disrupt the heart’s normal rhythm. AFib and flutter often cause the heart to beat irregularly and too fast, leading to symptoms like palpitations, shortness of breath, and fatigue. If left untreated, they can increase the risk of stroke and heart failure. Cardioversion helps restore a normal rhythm, easing symptoms and reducing long-term risks.
Supraventricular Tachycardia (SVT):
SVT is a sudden, rapid heartbeat that originates above the heart’s ventricles. It can cause lightheadedness, chest discomfort, or a pounding heart. When episodes are frequent or prolonged, electrical cardioversion may be used to quickly reset the heart’s rhythm and provide relief.
Persistent Arrhythmias Not Responsive to Medication:
In some cases, antiarrhythmic medications are not enough to restore or maintain a normal heart rhythm. When medications fail to control symptoms or stabilize the rhythm, cardioversion offers a more immediate and effective solution—especially for patients whose irregular heartbeat affects daily functioning or overall heart health.
At Advanced Cardiology, we use cardioversion as part of a comprehensive rhythm management strategy tailored to your needs. Our goal is to help you feel better, protect your heart, and reduce your risk of complications from long-standing arrhythmias.
Is Cardioversion Right for You?
If your heart is beating out of rhythm and it’s affecting your daily life, cardioversion may help you get back on track. This simple, effective procedure is often used when medications alone aren’t enough to restore a healthy heartbeat. You may be a candidate for cardioversion if:
-
You’re feeling the effects of arrhythmia—like dizziness, fatigue, or fluttering in the chest
-
You’ve been diagnosed with atrial fibrillation or atrial flutter that won’t resolve with medication
-
Your irregular rhythm raises your risk for blood clots or heart complications
-
Your cardiologist recommends rhythm restoration for better long-term heart function
At Advanced Cardiology, we perform cardioversion with precision and care—serving patients across Katy, Sugar Land, and the Greater Houston area with same-week availability.
Insurance and Cardioversion Coverage
Cardioversion is typically covered by most major insurance plans when deemed medically necessary. Our team will help verify your coverage and provide cost estimates before your procedure. For questions, feel free to call our clinic or check with your insurance provider directly.
Decisions Based on Cardioversion Results
Cardioversion isn’t just about restoring rhythm—it’s also about improving long-term heart health. Depending on your response to the procedure, your cardiologist may recommend:
-
Adjustments to your medications to maintain normal rhythm
-
Ongoing heart monitoring (e.g., Holter monitor or loop recorder)
-
Blood thinners to prevent stroke risk in AFib patients
-
Lifestyle changes and follow-up visits for rhythm maintenance
Get back to living with confidence. Our Houston-area clinics provide personalized arrhythmia care to help you feel your best.
