Important Safety Information
Chest Pain Can Be a Medical Emergency
New, sudden, severe, or unexplained chest pain may require immediate medical attention. Call 911 or seek emergency medical care if chest pain or pressure is severe, lasts more than a few minutes, or occurs with symptoms such as shortness of breath, sweating, nausea, fainting, or discomfort spreading to the arm, shoulder, back, neck, or jaw.
Advanced Cardiology provides outpatient cardiology evaluation. Do not wait for an office appointment if you believe you may be experiencing a medical emergency.
Emergency or Severe Symptoms
Sudden, severe, or worsening chest pain, or chest pain with shortness of breath, sweating, fainting, or discomfort spreading to the arm, back, neck, or jaw.
Stable or Recurring Concerns
Recurring chest pressure, tightness, discomfort with activity, or unexplained symptoms that are not an emergency but keep coming back.
Understanding Your Symptoms
Chest Pain Deserves the Right Evaluation
Chest pain is a symptom, not a diagnosis. Discomfort in the chest can arise from the heart, lungs, digestive system, muscles and ribs, or other causes. Some conditions are relatively minor, while others require prompt or emergency medical attention. Because symptoms can overlap, the way chest pain feels does not always reveal its cause.
For patients with stable, recurring, or unexplained symptoms, a cardiovascular evaluation may help determine whether heart disease is contributing to the discomfort. Evaluation can be particularly important when symptoms occur with physical activity or when a patient has cardiovascular risk factors such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, smoking history, known vascular disease, or a family history of premature cardiovascular disease.
At Advanced Cardiology, the evaluation is individualized. Dr. Adnan Khalid considers the pattern of your symptoms, your medical and family history, cardiovascular risk factors, physical findings and, when appropriate, cardiac testing before recommending the next step.

Your Cardiologist
Chest Pain Evaluation With Adnan Khalid, MD

His cardiovascular background supports the evaluation and management of patients with a broad range of heart-related concerns, including coronary artery disease, hypertension, heart rhythm disorders and heart failure.
Dr. Khalid takes a patient-centered approach to cardiovascular care. An evaluation begins with listening carefully to the patient's concerns, understanding when and how symptoms occur, reviewing cardiovascular risk factors, and determining what additional evaluation may be appropriate.
Instead of assuming that every episode of chest discomfort has the same cause, the objective is to identify whether cardiovascular disease may be contributing to the symptoms and develop an appropriate plan based on the individual patient.

When to Seek Evaluation
When Should You See a Cardiologist for Chest Pain?
Not every episode of chest discomfort is caused by heart disease, but recurring, unexplained, or activity-related symptoms deserve appropriate attention. A cardiology evaluation may be appropriate when symptoms are stable and non-emergent but continue to occur, particularly when cardiovascular risk factors are present.
Patients describe chest discomfort in different ways. It may feel like pressure, tightness, squeezing, heaviness, burning, aching, or simply an unusual sensation in the chest. Some people notice symptoms during walking, climbing stairs, exercise, or other physical activity. Others may experience chest discomfort together with shortness of breath, palpitations, dizziness, or unusual fatigue.
The characteristics of the symptoms provide important information, but they cannot reliably determine the cause by themselves. A cardiologist considers the complete clinical picture—including when the symptoms occur, how long they last, what makes them better or worse, medical history, family history and cardiovascular risk factors.
If chest pain is new, severe, rapidly worsening, or accompanied by symptoms that could indicate a medical emergency, call 911 rather than waiting for an outpatient cardiology appointment.
Possible Causes
What Can Cause Chest Pain?
Chest pain has many possible causes. Some originate in the cardiovascular system, while others involve the digestive system, lungs, chest wall, muscles, or other structures. Because different conditions can produce similar symptoms, medical evaluation may be necessary to determine the cause.
Heart-Related Causes of Chest Pain
Cardiovascular causes are particularly important to recognize because some require urgent treatment. Potential heart-related causes can include:
- Angina – Chest discomfort that can occur when the heart muscle does not receive enough oxygen-rich blood.
- Coronary artery disease – Narrowing or blockage of the coronary arteries can reduce blood flow to the heart and may cause chest pressure or discomfort, particularly during exertion.
- Acute coronary syndrome and heart attack – A sudden reduction or blockage of blood flow to the heart is a medical emergency and requires immediate evaluation.
- Pericardial conditions – Inflammation involving the tissue surrounding the heart can sometimes cause chest discomfort.
- Other cardiovascular conditions – Certain structural or cardiovascular problems may also produce symptoms involving the chest.
A patient's symptoms alone cannot confirm or exclude coronary artery disease. Clinical assessment and appropriate testing are important when a cardiac cause is suspected.
Non-Cardiac Causes of Chest Pain
Many episodes of chest discomfort are not caused by heart disease. Possible non-cardiac causes include:
- Acid reflux or GERD
- Esophageal irritation or spasm
- Muscle strain
- Rib or chest-wall inflammation
- Certain lung conditions
- Anxiety or panic symptoms
- Other gastrointestinal or musculoskeletal conditions
Because heart-related and non-cardiac symptoms can overlap, patients should not assume that chest discomfort is “just indigestion” or, conversely, that every episode represents heart disease.
Understanding Risk
Could Your Chest Pain Be Related to Your Heart?
No single symptom can determine whether chest discomfort is heart-related. However, certain symptom patterns and cardiovascular risk factors may increase the need for cardiac evaluation.
Chest Pressure or Tightness
Pressure, heaviness, squeezing, or tightness—particularly during activity—can warrant cardiovascular evaluation.
Symptoms With Exertion
Chest discomfort that develops during walking, climbing stairs, exercise, or physical work may require assessment for a cardiovascular cause.
Shortness of Breath
Breathlessness occurring with chest discomfort can be important, especially when symptoms are new or worsening.
Palpitations or Dizziness
A rapid, irregular, or unusually noticeable heartbeat together with dizziness or chest discomfort may require cardiovascular evaluation.
Cardiovascular Risk Factors
Risk factors can include high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, smoking history, family history of premature heart disease, increasing age, and known cardiovascular disease.
A note on interpretation: These findings do not prove that chest pain is heart-related. They help a clinician determine the level of concern and whether cardiovascular testing or additional evaluation is appropriate.
Your Evaluation
How a Cardiologist Evaluates Chest Pain
A thoughtful chest pain evaluation begins before any test is ordered. Understanding the circumstances surrounding the symptoms often provides important clues about what should happen next.
Detailed Symptom History
Dr. Khalid may ask where the discomfort occurs, what it feels like, how long it lasts, whether it happens at rest or with activity, and whether anything makes it better or worse. Associated symptoms such as shortness of breath, palpitations, dizziness, nausea, or unusual fatigue may also provide useful information.
Medical History & Cardiovascular Risk Assessment
The evaluation also includes a review of your medical history, medications, family history and cardiovascular risk factors. High blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, tobacco use, known vascular disease, and a family history of premature heart disease can influence how chest symptoms are evaluated.
Physical Examination
A cardiovascular examination may include assessment of heart rate and rhythm, blood pressure, heart and lung sounds, circulation, and other findings relevant to your symptoms.
Cardiac Testing When Appropriate
Not every patient with chest discomfort needs the same tests. Depending on your symptoms, examination and risk profile, Dr. Khalid may recommend cardiovascular testing to better understand heart rhythm, heart structure and function, or how the heart responds to physical stress. Testing should be selected according to the individual patient rather than using a one-size-fits-all approach.
Diagnostic Cardiology
Cardiac Testing for Chest Pain
When testing is appropriate, the goal is to answer a specific clinical question. Different tests provide different information, and the type of evaluation recommended depends on your symptoms and cardiovascular risk.
Electrocardiogram (EKG/ECG)
An electrocardiogram records the electrical activity of the heart. It can provide information about heart rate and rhythm and may identify certain abnormalities that can help guide further evaluation.
Echocardiogram
An echocardiogram uses ultrasound to evaluate the heart's structure and function, including the heart chambers, valves and pumping function. It may be useful when symptoms or examination findings suggest a structural or functional heart problem.
Stress Testing
Stress testing evaluates how the heart responds to increased workload and may be considered when symptoms occur with exertion or when assessment for coronary artery disease is clinically appropriate.
Heart Rhythm Monitoring
When chest discomfort occurs with palpitations, a racing heartbeat, dizziness, or intermittent rhythm symptoms, ambulatory heart monitoring may help evaluate heart rhythm over a longer period than a standard office EKG.
When more specialized testing or a procedure is needed, Dr. Khalid will explain what is being recommended and coordinate the appropriate next step. Some advanced studies may be ordered through or performed at an affiliated hospital or imaging facility.
Individualized Care
Chest Pain Treatment Depends on the Cause
There is no single treatment for chest pain because chest pain itself is a symptom rather than a diagnosis. The appropriate treatment depends on what is causing the discomfort, the patient's cardiovascular risk, test findings, other medical conditions, and the severity of the underlying problem.
When a cardiovascular cause is identified, treatment may include management of blood pressure or cholesterol, appropriate medications, lifestyle changes, additional cardiovascular testing, or more specialized treatment when clinically indicated.
For patients with coronary artery disease, the care plan may focus on improving cardiovascular risk factors, controlling symptoms and determining whether additional evaluation or interventional treatment is appropriate. Patients with hypertension, rhythm disorders, heart failure, or other cardiovascular conditions require treatment tailored to the specific diagnosis.
Dr. Khalid works with patients to explain the findings and discuss appropriate next steps so they can better understand both their symptoms and their cardiovascular health.
When another condition appears more likely to be responsible for the symptoms, appropriate coordination with primary care, gastroenterology, pulmonary care, emergency medicine, or another specialty may be recommended.
Heart & Artery Health
Chest Pain and Coronary Artery Disease
One reason cardiologists carefully evaluate certain types of chest discomfort is the possibility of coronary artery disease. Coronary artery disease develops when plaque builds up within the arteries that supply blood to the heart muscle. As these arteries narrow, the heart may not receive enough oxygen-rich blood during periods of increased demand.
Some patients with coronary artery disease experience angina, which may feel like pressure, tightness, squeezing, heaviness, or discomfort in the chest. Symptoms may become noticeable during walking, exercise, emotional stress, or other activities that increase the heart's workload.
However, coronary artery disease does not always produce classic symptoms, and chest discomfort can have many other causes. A cardiovascular evaluation considers the patient's symptoms together with age, medical history and risk factors before determining whether testing for coronary artery disease is appropriate.

Chest Pain Questions
Frequently Asked Questions About Chest Pain
When should I see a cardiologist for chest pain?
A cardiology evaluation may be appropriate for stable, recurring, unexplained, or activity-related chest discomfort, particularly if you have cardiovascular risk factors such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, smoking history, or a family history of premature heart disease. New or severe chest pain should be evaluated urgently rather than waiting for an outpatient appointment.
When is chest pain an emergency?
Call 911 for new, severe, or rapidly worsening chest pain, especially when it occurs with shortness of breath, sweating, nausea, fainting, or discomfort spreading to the arm, shoulder, back, neck, or jaw. If you are uncertain whether symptoms could represent an emergency, seeking immediate medical evaluation is the safer course.
Can I have chest pain even if my EKG is normal?
Yes. An EKG provides important information about the heart's electrical activity, but a single normal EKG does not identify every possible cause of chest pain or exclude every cardiovascular condition. Your cardiologist considers the EKG together with your symptoms, medical history, risk factors, examination and, when appropriate, additional testing.
What heart conditions can cause chest pain?
Potential cardiovascular causes include angina related to coronary artery disease, acute coronary syndromes, inflammation involving structures around the heart, and other cardiovascular conditions. Chest pain also has many non-cardiac causes, which is why appropriate evaluation is important.
What tests may a cardiologist recommend for chest pain?
Testing depends on the individual patient. Evaluation may include an EKG, echocardiogram, stress testing, heart rhythm monitoring, or other testing when clinically appropriate. Not every patient requires every test.
Can high blood pressure be related to chest discomfort?
High blood pressure is an important cardiovascular risk factor and can increase the long-term risk of coronary artery disease and other heart conditions. Chest discomfort should not automatically be attributed to blood pressure alone, particularly when symptoms are new or unexplained.
Can acid reflux feel like heart-related chest pain?
Yes. Acid reflux and other gastrointestinal conditions can cause burning or discomfort in the chest, and symptoms can sometimes overlap with cardiovascular symptoms. Patients should not assume unexplained chest pain is reflux without appropriate evaluation, especially when cardiovascular risk factors or concerning symptoms are present.
Should I see a cardiologist for recurring chest pressure?
Recurring chest pressure, particularly during physical activity or when accompanied by shortness of breath or other cardiovascular symptoms, may warrant evaluation by a cardiologist. If the pressure becomes severe, occurs suddenly, or appears to represent an emergency, call 911.
